Days Creek Athletics
August 27, 2022
To our loyal sports fans, I am hopeful that all of you were able to have a relaxing summer season after what proved to be a challenging and at times frustrating year. Athletics is such a big part of this community and the support you show for our programs is second to none. Last year was more difficult as an Athletic Director and coach than perhaps you can imagine. At current time, the OSAA has stated that masks will not be required for athletes actively engaged in an athletic event. Coaches, managers and players on the bench however, must wear a mask. Furthermore, all fans must wear a mask. These are the protocols we must abide by if we want to be able to attend games in person. As I am writing this I am both excited and discouraged. Excited that at the current time, we are allowed full schedules in all sports. I am excited that athletes do not have to wear a mask while participating actively. Excited that there are no limitations to the amount of spectators we can have in the gym. I am excited that our athletes are competing again and have the opportunity to showcase their talents live, rather than on a Facebook page or live streamed event! I am discouraged however, because I believe this may all be in jeopardy. I am discouraged at the amount of fans I witnessed in our first athletic event of the season, where we were guests in another school’s gym, that simply ignored protocol. I am discouraged at what is to come if this behavior continues. I am discouraged to think that this could lead to the exact outcome for all athletic events statewide, as we witnessed last year. I am discouraged that our student athletes may not be able to finish a season with parents and fans watching from the stands. I am discouraged. So, having said all of that. I implore you to abide by the protocols that are mandated by the state, if for no other reason than to allow our athletes to continue to play a regular season. I know most of our fan base fairly well. I know the pride that you have in our kids and our programs. I know that you would be utterly dismayed if visitors came into our community and ignored the expectations in “our house.” It is my sincere hope moving forward, especially when visiting other schools, we can agree that regardless of where you stand on the “mask“ issue, and for the sake of our kids and our programs, that you will all wear a mask so your children can continue to play. Thank you, Mr. James Ellis Administrator/Athletic Director |
